Tesla Solar & Battery System Shutdown and Restart
Use this procedure if you have a Telsa Powerwall and you need to shut down or restart your system.
Shut Down
1. Switch OFF the solar generations
Locate the AC breaker or isolator associated with your solar inverter and switch it OFF.
It may be labelled:
Solar / PV / Inverter / PV AC
If your solar inverter has its own clearly identified DC/PV switch, switch this OFF as applicable to your installation.
Tesla specifies that interconnected solar generation should be switched off or disconnected before the Powerwall is switched off.
2. Switch OFF the PowerwallLocate the ON/OFF switch on the Tesla Powerwall and move it to the OFF position.
The Powerwall's status light should turn off.
Do not open the Powerwall or remove any covers.

3. Switch OFF the Powerwall AC breaker
Locate the AC breaker supplying the Tesla Powerwall and switch it OFF.
Only operate breakers or isolators that are clearly identified as belonging to the Powerwall system.
4. Switch OFF the Backup Gateway AC breaker
If your installation has a Tesla Backup Gateway, switch OFF its identified AC breaker/isolator.
On some whole-home backup installations, this breaker may be located within the Backup Gateway. Do not open electrical covers to access equipment that isn't intended for customer operation.
5. Wait
Leave the system switched OFF for at least 1 minute before restarting.
Tesla specifies a minimum one-minute wait during a Powerwall system power cycle.
Restart
1. Switch ON the AC breakers
Switch the Backup Gateway AC breaker/isolator ON.
Then switch the Powerwall AC breaker ON.
Tesla specifies that the AC breakers are restored before the Powerwall itself is switched back on.
2. Switch ON the Powerwall
Move the ON/OFF switch on the Tesla Powerwall to ON.
Allow the Powerwall and Gateway time to initialise and establish communication.
The status light on the Powerwall should illuminate as the system starts. Tesla advises allowing the system to complete its boot sequence without repeatedly switching or resetting it.
3. Switch ON the solar generation
Switch the solar inverter / solar AC supply back ON.
If you switched OFF a clearly identified PV/DC switch on the solar inverter during shutdown, return this to ON as appropriate for that inverter.
4. Allow the system to restart
Allow several minutes for the Powerwall, Gateway and solar system to initialise and return to normal operation.
You can check the Tesla app to confirm that the Powerwall, solar generation, grid and home power flows have returned.
Important Safety Information
Only operate clearly identified external switches, breakers and controls.
Your installation and labelling may differ from the examples shown on this page. If you cannot clearly identify a switch or breaker, do not operate it, contact Sol Viva for assistance.
Do not:
- Open the Powerwall, Gateway or inverter.
- Remove electrical covers.
- Disconnect solar or battery cables.
- Touch exposed wiring.
- Operate the Backup Gateway manual override.
- Repeatedly restart equipment that continues to report a fault.
Tesla states that Powerwall and the Backup Gateway are not user-serviceable and should be repaired by appropriately qualified/Tesla-certified personnel.
In an Emergency
If there is smoke, fire, sparking, a burning smell, unusual heat, damaged equipment, exposed wiring or water entering electrical equipment, do not perform this reset procedure.
Keep away from the equipment and contact the emergency services where appropriate.
Solar panels can continue producing DC electricity whenever exposed to daylight, even when other parts of the system have been switched off.
This shutdown procedure should therefore not be considered confirmation that every part of the installation is electrically safe.
Still Having Problems?
If your Tesla system does not return to normal operation after the restart, do not repeatedly power cycle it.
Check the Tesla app for any system alerts or warnings.
